Gearing right or wrong?

If a top class road racer set up the gearing of a Superstock bike, then if another top class racer tried it he would find it pretty close, but even a slightly different riding style would soon see the sprocket box open again.

If the same rider set up the bike then gave it to a complete novice, the gearing would be a mile out. He may well have the courage for it, but he just wouldn’t have the sheer speed to carry the same gearing. He will brake earlier, brake longer, use less lean angle and not be on the gas as early. The gearing will be wrong.

It can also vary considerably as you become accustomed to the track. Your first laps of a new track need a different set up to your fastest laps one you have got your eye in. – Little tip here, don’t change sprockets until you have really settled with the track because you will have to do it again for sure!

The only lesson here is that there is no perfect set up. Each track set up will need to be tailored to the individual rider, track, bike and conditions.
