Chain alignment

Motorcycle drive chains need to be aligned correctly. That is, the sprockets need to run in line and the chain run between the two. Any misalignment will result in premature wear to both the chain and sprockets and can cause chain failure. A periodic check of the sprockets can help and if you can see wear on one side of the sprockets and not the other then they are running out of line. The best way to check the alignment is to run a straight edge between the two sprockets to ensure they are in line. Sometimes this will necessitate the removal of the chain and sometimes it is difficult because other parts that are in the way. A laser alignment tool can help with this.

Most people rely upon manufacturer’s marks on the swinging arm to align the chain but very often they are not very accurate so you will still need to use a straight edge. Incidentally, this can also be a useful way to spot other damage such as bent frames!
